The journalist’s allusion to “benign misconceptions” signals a perceived need to maintain the figure of the wolf as ravening, drooling man-eater firmly in the minds of the non-hunting public. As David Quammen puts it in Monster of God, “Man-eating invites demonizing, and demonizing a species is the first step toward total war.” (61). Adam Douglas similarly notes in The Beast Within, with respect to the creators of werewolf films:

They are too aware that a real wolf looks disarmingly like some of the household pets on which many of their patrons lavish hours of care and attention, and are perhaps also conscious of growing public unease over the wolf’s ecological plight. They know that they must play up the monstrous angle, and so their furry creations look only vaguely like real wolves as they snarl and stumble (almost always on two legs rather than four) to their inevitable end.
